DIPLOMA IN SPORTS COACHING

SHORT DESCRIPTION
 
This one year non-degree study programme is designed to provide knowledge and skills for individuals working or planning to work in the fields related to sports coaching and to introduce students to the latest advancements in sports science, to develop their ability to maintain professional competence and to establish foundation for further degree studies.
 
Throughout the programme, you will increase your knowledge and understanding through both theoretical studies and practical training skills. You will learn how to coach and deliver sports programs for all ages and skill levels – from kids to adults, and from beginners to experienced athletes. You will find out how nutrition and other sports sciences can maximise training results and optimise an athlete’s performance. You will improve your knowledge of anatomy, physiology and biomechanics for sport.
 
The B Diploma in Sport Coaching is a part of the Bachelor of Sports programme. The programme consists of 8 compulsory courses shared with Bachelor of Sport students.
 
TARGET GROUP
 
The course is intended for young people with general school education, who have a particular interest in sport, for young coaches, students and graduates in Physical Education, who are interested to gain knowledge and improve their professional competence in sport science. Applicants may be interviewed.
 

MODULES:
 
Motor Control and Learning (6 ECTS)
 
The course is aimed to acquaint students with ‘classical works’ on theory and practice of motor control and learning, as well as with the latest advances in this field. The range of questions dealt during the course includes classification of movements; mechanisms and regularities of motor control, peculiarities of controlling complex dynamic systems; peculiarities for learning process, estimation of efficiency of learning, coordination of movements and motor memory.
 
Sports and Exercise Physiology (6 ECTS)
 
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with structural and functional changes in the human body as a direct result of the short-term and long-term effects of physical load.
 
Sports Biomechanics (3 ECTS)
 
The purpose of this course is to develop the ability to perform systematic descriptive/ qualitative and quantitative analysis of selected athletic performances. In doing this, the students should acquire video, force platform recording and observational skills and be able to compare techniques with an expert, detect and correct errors in techniques that limit athlete’s performance. On completion of this course the students should be familiar with the use of standard biomechanical equipment, data collection and processing techniques.
 
 
The module draws together fundamental knowledge from other disciplines, design of the training programme, models of coaching behaviour, developing the students’ understanding of, and ability to explain, key skills to coaching effectiveness.
 
Sports and Nutritional Biochemistry (4.5 ECTS)
 
The course is aimed to provide information about the main regularities, mechanisms of metabolism and energy exchange, their regulation during the life cycle and physical load, getting of energy substrates into the cell, change, cumulation and transport of energy substrates, balance of electrolytes, concentration of ammonia ions, oxygen delivery by the microcirculation to mitochondria, neurohumoral and intra-cell regulation of metabolism and energy exchange, peculiarities during physical load, long-term changes controlling the nutrition.
 
 
The course covers the major areas of psychology: the nature of psychology as a science, principles of learning, the relationship between physiological and psychological processes in humans, sensation and perception, cognitive processes, motivation and emotion, personality and development. The analysis of the object of sport psychology, motivation of sport activity, athletes’ individual character features, aggression, sports activity, anxiety and arousal of athletes. The course will help the students to understand the regularities of human psychic activities and apply them in life and pedagogical work, as well as to understand the laws that govern manifestation of the human psyche under conditions of sports activities.
 
Coaching Science of the Selected Sport (15 ECTS)
 
Aerobic gymnastics, Basketball, Bodybuilding, Boxing, Canoe–kayak, Conditioning, Fitness, Handball, Judo, Orienteering, Shooting, Soccer, Swimming, Track and Field Athletics, Weightlifting and Wrestling.
 
The course includes sport and its development, competition rules, organisational structure, philosophy of athlete training, specific aspects of sports biomechanics, sports physiology, sports pedagogy and psychology, athlete nutrition as well as methods of teaching and developing motor skills, the processes of athlete regeneration, methods of determination of selection and training as well as evaluation. The course also covers training and performance of athletes of various age groups and various skills, planning of the long–term and annual season, modern technologies of athlete training, skills of athlete sport performance management. The aim of the course is to train a coach to develop the athletes’ individual potential sports abilities, using the most advanced athlete training technologies and to develop them as personalities.
 
Internship of the Selected Sport (15 ECTS)
 
The internship is aimed to develop professional skills needed for sports coaching. Students will be acquainted with the activities of sports clubs or sports schools and the specificity of the coach’s work. They will examine and analyse training sessions, personally perform trainings, get acquainted with the principles and methods of athlete selection, learn to assess athletes’ performance, compose the annual work plan and the calendar of competitions, will participate in the organisation of the competitions.
The student will have an opportunity to train and to have his or her practice guided by highly experienced and well known coaches who train Lithuanian national athletes and teams.
 
COURSE DURATION:
 
One year.
 
CERTIFICATE AND CREDITS:

Certificate (60 ECTS). Diploma in Sport Coaching.

 
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?
 
The applicants should hold a certificate of secondary education, be proficient in English and/or Russian and have basic knowledge in Human Anatomy and Biology.
 
TUITION FEE:
 
3500 EUR per year (including course material).
